Dr. Michael Z. Mekjian obtained his QME certification in 2001, and conducts both AME and QME services within the specialties of Psychology and Neuropsychology. He also provides Independent Medical Evaluations, Fitness for Duty Evaluations, and Threat Assessment Services to a variety of companies in California, and for employees working in regular job settings, as well as safety sensitive work environments in both urban/industrial and rural/agricultural work locations. Dr. Mekjian has extensive experience and knowledge of the California Workers’ Compensation Benefits System, and the challenges faced by employees, employers, attorneys, and adjustors in terms of navigating through this complex system pertaining to workplace injuries. To that end, Dr. Mekjian conducts a comprehensive QME evaluation which provides a clear and concise analysis of the complex issues regarding industrial causation of psychiatric injuries, from which a detailed and ratable report is generated that incorporates the AMA 5th Edition Guides to Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, and meets all report requirements established by the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board.
In terms of education and training, Dr. Mekjian completed his Psychology B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in California, where he has been licensed as a Clinical Psychologist for 27 years. His training includes an Externship at the Sepulveda Epilepsy Education Program and Cognitive Disorders Clinic at the Sepulveda Veterans Administration Hospital in California – working primarily with Veterans and their families. Dr. Mekjian then went on to complete his full-time Internship at U.C. Irvine Medical Center, with training rotations in Inpatient Psychiatry, Neurology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Outpatient Psychiatry. He then completed his Postdoctoral Fellowship Training Program in Neuropsychology at the Neuropsychiatric Institute and Hospital at UCLA Medical Center, where he was appointed to the position of Chief Fellow during his training. Dr. Mekjian also participated in additional training rotations on the Neurology Service at Children’s Hospital – Los Angeles, and the Infectious Diseases Service at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center – specializing in evaluating patients with head injury, seizure disorders, brain tumors, dementia, learning disabilities, cancer, and HIV. After completing his training, Dr. Mekjian served on the Clinical Faculty as an Assistant Professor in the UCLA School of Medicine for 21 years, where he taught and supervised Clinical Interns, Residents and Fellows, and was also on the Clinical Staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for 19 years. In addition to Dr. Mekjian’s experience working with patients with primary medical conditions, he also has extensive experience in evaluating patients with primary psychiatric diagnoses, as well as those with chemical dependency issues, and assisting referring physicians with diagnostic clarification and treatment recommendations.
