David L. Coffman, D.O., FACS

Dr. David L. Coffman is an accomplished osteopathic physician and surgeon with a distinguished career spanning over 25 years in general surgery, trauma, and surgical critical care. He currently serves as Associate Dean of Clinical Education and Associate Professor of Clinical Sciences at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine-California (TUCOM-CA), overseeing the clinical training of third- and fourth-year medical students, managing curriculum development, and ensuring excellence across clinical rotations and affiliated sites.

Dr. Coffman’s clinical expertise includes general, trauma, and critical care surgery, as well as complex urgent-emergent procedures in obstetrics, gynecology, dermatology, and endoscopy. He has held leadership roles as Chief of Surgery, Trauma Surgeon, and Surgical Critical Care Intensivist at multiple institutions, including Northern Maine Medical Center, Adventist-Rideout Medical Center, Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital, Central Maine Medical Center, and Yale-New Haven Hospital. He has extensive experience mentoring residents, medical students, and fellows in surgical techniques, perioperative management, and advanced procedural skills.

A committed educator and scholar, Dr. Coffman has developed and directed numerous courses in surgical anatomy, ultrasound (POCUS), life-saving procedures, and advanced clinical skills. He serves as national faculty and item writer for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) and the COMAT/COMLEX examinations, contributing to curriculum design, assessment, and pedagogical innovation. He has presented internationally on complex systems in medical education and chaos theory, linking scientific research to clinical training.

Dr. Coffman earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Des Moines University, completed his general surgery residency at Des Moines General Hospital, and completed trauma and surgical critical care fellowships at Yale University School of Medicine. He maintains board certification in general surgery and is recognized for his leadership in surgical education, curriculum innovation, and clinical excellence.
