Dr. Eric J. Rothchild is a board-certified ophthalmologist with extensive experience in medical, surgical, and refractive ophthalmology. He has held long-standing leadership roles as a Medical and Surgical Director and practice founder, with a career dedicated to advancing clinical outcomes, surgical innovation, and physician education. His clinical focus includes cataract surgery, refractive surgery, intraocular lens technology, and comprehensive ophthalmic care, delivered within a multidisciplinary and patient-centered framework.
Since 1988, Dr. Rothchild has served as the Founder and Medical & Surgical Director of the Rothchild Eye Institute in Delray Beach, Florida. He is also the Founder and Medical & Surgical Director of the South County Outpatient Surgery Center, established in 2006. In these roles, he has overseen clinical operations, surgical services, physician staffing, and quality improvement initiatives while maintaining an active surgical practice.
Dr. Rothchild has an extensive academic and teaching background. He has served as an Affiliate Assistant Professor at Florida Atlantic University College of Medicine, participated on the medical school admissions committee, and supervised medical student clinical rotations in ophthalmology. He has also been a course instructor for cataract and refractive surgery programs with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the International Society of Refractive Surgery, as well as multiple LASIK and excimer laser certification courses.
Throughout his career, Dr. Rothchild has served as a principal investigator and collaborator on numerous FDA and multicenter clinical trials involving intraocular lenses, phakic implants, LASIK platforms, glaucoma therapies, and excimer laser technologies. His research affiliations include projects with Alcon, Bausch & Lomb, Allergan, VISX, OPHTEC, and Chiron Ophthalmic Laboratories. He has authored and co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and has delivered invited presentations and surgical demonstrations nationally and internationally.
Dr. Rothchild earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Emory University and completed premedical studies at Columbia University. He received his medical degree from New York Medical College, completed his internship at UCLA/St. Mary’s Medical Center, his ophthalmology residency at Cornell/North Shore University Hospital, and a fellowship affiliated with Ohio State University and Cornell University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.
