Marcia Isakari, M.D., M.P.H., FACOEM is a nationally recognized expert in Occupational and Environmental Medicine with over two decades of experience managing complex worker’s compensation cases, occupational injuries, and hazardous exposures. She is a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), a distinction honoring her leadership, education, and commitment to the field.
Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese and conversant in Japanese, Dr. Isakari brings a culturally responsive approach to healthcare, enhancing access and outcomes for diverse patient populations. She has held numerous leadership roles, including Medical Director of the Center for Occupational & Environmental Medicine at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), where she oversaw occupational health services for 45,000 university and local employees. Her expertise spans fitness-for-duty evaluations, employee exposure management, joint injections, medical surveillance, and public health emergency response.
Dr. Isakari is a prolific contributor to the academic community, with multiple peer-reviewed publications addressing topics such as respiratory protection, digital health privacy, and pandemic response. She was honored with ACOEM’s Health Achievement Award for her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Her prior roles include Medical Director at Sutter Regional Foundation and St. Joseph’s Occupational Health Clinics, and she has served as Lead Physician in various clinical settings. Internationally trained, Dr. Isakari earned her M.D. from the Pontifical University of Campinas in Brazil and completed advanced studies in Gastric Oncology in Japan, as well as a Master of Public Health from the Medical College of Wisconsin and occupational medicine training at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Isakari remains active in shaping occupational medicine policy through leadership in organizations such as WOEMA and ACOEM, and has been instrumental in guiding institutional biosafety and employee health protocols across UC campuses. She is also a Qualified Medical Evaluator in California and certified in multiple specialty areas, including family medicine and medical review for MROCC and FMCSA programs.
