Dr. Matthew Gibbons is a Licensed Clinical and Forensic Psychologist with extensive experience in forensic evaluation, neuropsychological assessment, severe mental illness, and cognitive-behavioral treatment across hospital, correctional, academic, and community settings. He currently serves as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Forensic II, with the County of Orange Health Care Agency (November 2018–Present), conducting multifaceted evaluations of adult psychiatric patients throughout Southern California. His work includes assessments of grave disability, capacity to give informed consent, and least restrictive level of care determinations. Dr. Gibbons provides expert witness testimony in Superior Court on civil commitment matters, consults with the Public Guardian, County Counsel, and private attorneys, and completes declarations related to temporary conservatorship, termination of conservatorship, and Murphy Conservatorships.
Since April 2018, Dr. Gibbons has also served as Clinical Director and Licensed Psychologist (Consultant) at Genesis New Beginnings in Huntington Beach, California, providing integrated cognitive-behavioral services to individuals with severe mental illness and dual diagnoses. From October 2016 to July 2018, he practiced as a Licensed Clinical Health and Neuropsychologist at St. Jude Hospital in Orange County, delivering neurological testing and cognitive rehabilitation for patients with traumatic brain injury, stroke, dementia, and related conditions.
Dr. Gibbons previously served as Director of Clinical Training for the Psy.D. program at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (Southern California Campuses) from August 2014 to September 2020 and has been an Associate Professor-Adjunct Faculty since January 2010. His earlier training includes a Neuropsychological/Acute Rehabilitation Postdoctoral Fellowship at Little Company of Mary San Pedro Hospital Providence (2008–2009) and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Center for Psychological Services in Northfield, Illinois (2009–2010).
He earned his Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology (2009) and Master’s Degree (2006) from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from The University of Iowa (1998).
