Ronald McCowan, M.D., MBA

Dr. Ronald McCowan, M.D., M.B.A. is a board-certified cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist with over three decades of clinical and academic experience. He currently serves as Medical Director of Palliative Care at Riverside University Health System (RUHS) in Moreno Valley, California, and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Riverside​​.

Dr. McCowan earned his medical degree from Loma Linda University and completed his internal medicine and cardiology training at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles. He then pursued advanced subspecialty training in cardiac electrophysiology at the Cleveland Clinic, a globally recognized center for cardiovascular care​. He later earned an M.B.A. in Healthcare Management from Regis University, further strengthening his expertise in clinical leadership and medical systems operations.

Prior to his current role, Dr. McCowan spent nearly three decades in Charleston, West Virginia, where he practiced cardiology and electrophysiology at Charleston Area Medical Center. During his tenure, he served as Director of Electrophysiology and held academic appointments as Associate Clinical Professor at both Marshall University and West Virginia University​​.

Dr. McCowan is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Electrophysiology (recertified in 2016), and Hospice and Palliative Care (2022). His clinical interests evolved to include end-of-life care, leading him to complete a fellowship in Palliative Care at UC Irvine in 2017​.

In addition to his extensive medical contributions, Dr. McCowan has published more than a dozen peer-reviewed journal articles and abstracts in the field of electrophysiology, with notable work on implantable cardioverter defibrillators and catheter ablation techniques​. He is also the author of two books that reflect his personal journey and spiritual insight.

An active member of the community, Dr. McCowan founded a medical society in West Virginia focused on reducing health disparities and providing preventive screenings to underserved populations​. Outside of medicine, he enjoys playing the saxophone and flute, weightlifting, and spending time with his family and church community
