Dr. Lymaries Velez is a board-certified psychiatrist based in Los Angeles, California. She is currently a Staff Psychiatrist at Patton State Hospital in Patton, California (July 2024–present), providing inpatient services to the acute 1370 incompetent-to-stand-trial patient population. In this role, she focuses on optimizing medication regimens for symptom control while also working toward the lowest effective doses and minimizing side-effect burden. Her clinical approach incorporates psychodynamic psychopharmacology and motivational interviewing to support collaborative decision-making with patients. Dr. Velez also educates and trains resident and medical student trainees through direct clinical supervision, formal lectures, and case and article discussion.
In addition to her inpatient work, Dr. Velez provides outpatient psychiatric care at Comprehensive Psychiatric Services (CPS) in Riverside, California (December 2024–present). Her outpatient practice integrates cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic psychotherapy into treatment plans, reflecting an emphasis on treatment that extends beyond medication management.
Dr. Velez completed her Psychiatry Residency at the University of Florida (July 2020–June 2024) and earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Florida (August 2016–May 2020). She also completed her undergraduate education at the University of Florida, earning a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies—Basic Biological and Medical Sciences (summa cum laude) (August 2013–May 2017).
She holds an active Florida medical license (2021–present) and an active California medical license (2024–present). Dr. Velez is also a BrainsWay Deep TMS System Operator for H1 and H7 coils (2024–present). Her honors include the Excellence in Medical Student Education during the Psychiatry Clerkship award (2024), the Ross McElroy, MD Psychotherapy Award (2023), and the John M. Kuldau, MD Research Award (2022), as well as induction into the National Gold Humanism Honor Society (2022).
