Dr. Sailaja Akella is triple board-certified in Adult Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as well as in Integrative Medicine through the American Board of Physician Specialties. She has spent over 10 years in academic medicine and has worked with a wide range of patients in a diverse array of clinical settings, from rural outpatient mental health clinics to densely populated city clinics. Her clinical interest lies in treating patient’s holistically and in the context of their life experiences.
She earned her Bachelor of Engineering degree from Stony Brook University, graduating Honors with Cum Laude. After obtaining her medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, she completed an Adult Psychiatry residency followed by a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship at the Zucker Hillside Hospital at Northwell Health in New York.
Upon completion of her medical training, she worked at the University of California (UC) Davis as a staff psychiatrist for numerous undergraduate and graduate students. She also served as volunteer clinical faculty at UC Davis Medical Center in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, where she lectured and supervised Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellows-in-training. While working for many years with young patients, Dr. Akella went on to complete a second fellowship in Integrative Medicine through the Academy of Integrative and Holistic Medicine in La Jolla, San Diego, to provide her patients with more expansive diagnostic and treatment modalities.
In 2023 Dr. Akella became credentialed to serve as a Qualified Medical Evaluator (QME) in the state of California while continuing her private medical practice. Dr. Akella brings her enthusiasm and depth of knowledge to provide comprehensive and compassionate mental health assessments to her QME practice.
